What We Take and What We Cannot Take

  • What We Take and What We Cannot Take

What We Take and What We Cannot Take

When you book a clearance, one of the first questions is simple: what we take and what we do not. This page sets out, in plain English, which rubbish removal items we collect every day, which house clearance items we sometimes accept with a bit of planning, and what we cannot take for safety or legal reasons.

Use this guide to check your list of items we collect. If you are ever unsure, the answer is easy, call us. We can talk through what you have and confirm anything borderline before booking. We can talk through what we take, confirm anything that might be borderline, and make sure there are no surprises on the day.

Call Now to Book

Quick overview – yes, no and “call us first”

To keep things simple, think of this page in three parts:

  • We can take (yes)
Everyday rubbish removal items from homes and businesses, including most furniture, appliances, general household waste, garden waste, DIY rubble and standard office or shop contents.
  • We sometimes take (call us first)
Certain awkward or unusually heavy items, limited tyres, small amounts of dried paint and large one-off pieces that may need extra planning. These are best confirmed by phone so we can agree access and safe handling.
  • We cannot take (no)
Hazardous materials, asbestos, gas bottles, petrol or diesel, large volumes of chemicals, clinical or medical waste, explosives, firearms and anything else that requires specialist licensed removal.

The sections below go into detail so you can see exactly what we take and what we cannot take in each category.

Household and furniture items – what we take

These are the most common house clearance items, and in almost all normal situations they sit firmly in the “yes” column for what we take.

  • Sofas, armchairs and sofa beds
  • Dining tables, chairs and stools
  • Beds, mattresses, headboards and bedside tables are all common household items we can usually take in normal situations.
  • Wardrobes, chests of drawers and dressing tables
  • Bookcases, TV units and coffee tables
  • Rugs, lamps and general soft furnishings
  • Children’s furniture and most toys
  • Mirrors, pictures and general household ornaments
  • Bags, boxes and general clutter from cupboards and lofts

These are everyday items we collect during house clearances, end of tenancy work and one-off domestic jobs. If you are making a list, you can safely assume these are within what we take, unless any item is fixed to the building in a way that needs tools or specialist skills (for example, built-in furniture or fitted wardrobes – call us to discuss those).

Appliances and electrical items (WEEE)

For appliances and electrical items, we regularly collect a wide range of domestic and small commercial units as part of normal rubbish removal work.

We regularly collect a wide range of domestic and small commercial appliances as part of normal rubbish removal items:

  • Fridges and freezers (domestic size)
  • Washing machines and tumble dryers
  • Dishwashers and microwaves
  • Electric ovens and hobs (already disconnected)
  • TVs, monitors and computer equipment
  • Small electricals (toasters, kettles, printers, speakers, etc.)

All of these sit within what we take, as long as they can be moved safely and are disconnected. They are treated as WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and are taken through proper recycling routes.

However, some electricals fall under what we cannot take or “call us first”:

  • Very large commercial refrigeration units – call us first
  • Appliances still plumbed in or wired in – must be disconnected before we arrive
  • Items that are leaking fluids or clearly unsafe – often what we cannot take for safety reasons

If you are not sure whether your appliance counts as a standard house clearance item or something specialist, call and we will confirm where it sits in what we take and how best to handle it.

Garden waste and outdoor items – what we take

For garden work and outdoor clearances, what we take usually includes:

  • Grass cuttings, plants and hedge trimmings
  • Branches, prunings and small tree sections
  • Leaves, weeds and general green waste
  • Old garden furniture, benches and tables
  • Barbecues (clean and cool, without gas bottles)
  • Plant pots, grow bags and compost bags
  • Small sheds or playhouses that are already dismantled
  • Fencing panels, posts and trellis (manageable sizes)

These are standard rubbish removal items on garden clearance jobs. They are well within what we take, though very heavy loads of soil or hardcore may sit in the “call us first” category because of weight limits.

Outdoor items that move closer to what we cannot take include:

  • Gas bottles and cylinders (even if apparently empty) – what we cannot take
  • Pesticides, weed killers and concentrated garden chemicals – call us first, as these may need a specialist route
  • Larger, fully built sheds, garages or outbuildings fixed to concrete slabs may require a separate dismantling service rather than standard loading.

If in doubt with any outdoor job, call us and we will explain which parts are clearly in what we take and which may need separate arrangements.

It will be completed in approximately 7-8 hours

DIY and building projects generate a different type of waste, and many of these materials can still be collected if they are planned properly. Many of these materials fall into what we take, but because they are heavy, we need to plan them carefully.

Typically within what we take:

  • Bricks, tiles and concrete (reasonable quantities)
  • Broken bathroom suites (toilets, sinks, baths)
  • Plasterboard (bagged and kept separate)
  • Timber offcuts, skirting and architrave
  • Doors, frames and window units (without glass if possible)
  • Radiators (already drained and disconnected)
  • General DIY rubble and bagged hardcore
  • Old tools and metal fixings

These are common rubbish removal items for building waste removal jobs, and we collect them regularly. However, very heavy loads are sometimes limited by vehicle weight, so there are cases where we move into the “call us first” category:

  • Large amounts of pure soil, hardcore or rubble – call us first
  • Whole driveways or patios lifted in one go – call us first

And there are some clear examples of what we cannot take:

  • Asbestos sheets, insulation or materials suspected of containing asbestos
  • Large quantities of chemical products, solvents or adhesives
  • Drums of unknown liquids or industrial chemicals

Those items require licensed hazardous waste specialists, so they are firmly inside what we cannot take.

Office, commercial and shop items – what we take

For office, commercial and shop items, what we take usually includes desks, chairs, storage and general workplace contents. what we take usually includes:

  • Desks, tables and meeting room furniture
  • Office chairs, pedestals and storage units
  • Filing cabinets (empty or with manageable contents)
  • Shelving, racking and display units (dismantled where possible)
  • Point of sale units, counters and bar furniture
  • General office clutter – paperwork, files, stationery and packaging
  • IT kit and small electronics (as WEEE)
  • Back-room stock, damaged goods and old fixtures

These are all typical house clearance items in a commercial setting and sit clearly in what we take, as long as they can be lifted and removed safely. If your office or shop has unusually large machinery or very heavy equipment, that moves into the “call us first” section so we can confirm whether it is within what we take or needs a specialist service.

Items we sometimes take – please call to check

Some things sit on the borderline between what we take and what we cannot take. They are not automatically excluded, but they need a quick conversation first:

  • Tyres
    • A few car tyres may be possible with a surcharge, depending on current disposal options and how many you have.
    • A large pile of tyres generally sits in what we cannot take. Best to call first.
  • Paint and small quantities of household chemicals
    • Completely dried-out or solidified paint tins may be treated as general waste and fall under what we take.
    • Large volumes of liquid paint, thinners or solvents lean towards what we cannot take and often require specialist disposal.
    • Always call to confirm before we agree to collect them.
  • Very large or awkward items
    • Upright pianos, big safes, hot tubs and similar items may be possible with enough planning, strong access and extra labour.
    • These can be within what we take, but only if we are satisfied that they can be moved safely and legally.
  • Mixed loads with a few restricted items
    • If most of your job fits neatly into what we take but a handful of items are borderline, call and we can usually suggest practical options to keep the main clearance on track.

For anything in this “sometimes” category, a short phone call before booking is essential. We can then clearly say whether it is in what we take, part of what we cannot take, or something we can handle with conditions.

Items we cannot take – for safety or legal reasons

There are some things that are always outside what we take. For legal, safety and licensing reasons, these must be handled by specialist hazardous waste or regulated services:

  • Asbestos in any form (sheets, tiles, insulation, textured coatings)
  • Gas bottles and cylinders of any size, including BBQ and patio gas
  • Petrol, diesel and other fuels
  • Engine oil and large quantities of lubricants
  • Large volumes of chemicals, acids, solvents and pesticides
  • Clinical, medical or biological waste
  • Sharps and needles (beyond minimal domestic items in a safe container)
  • Firearms, ammunition, explosives or fireworks
  • Pressurised containers and industrial gas tanks
  • Radioactive materials (for example certain industrial gauges)

These are clearly in what we cannot take. If your clearance includes any of these, we will advise you to contact the appropriate specialist service or local authority. We cannot legally or safely carry them as part of normal rubbish removal items.

How to use this guide when you call

Before you call, it can help to make a quick list grouped roughly as we have done here:

  • Furniture and household items we collect
  • Appliances and electricals
  • For garden waste and outdoor items, what we take usually includes cuttings, branches, old furniture and manageable outdoor clutter.
  • DIY and garage waste
  • Office or shop contents
  • Any items you are unsure about

You do not have to list every single object, but having an overview makes it easier for us to confirm what we take, point out anything in what we cannot take, and talk through any “call us first” items.

On the phone we will:

  • Confirm that most of your list sits firmly within what we take
  • Flag anything that is clearly within what we cannot take
  • Advise on safe alternatives for restricted items
  • Agree how to handle any borderline cases so the whole job runs smoothly

That way, you know exactly where you stand before the team arrives.

FAQs about what we take and what we cannot take

Do I need to tell you every single item before you come?
No, but it helps to give a clear overview. If you can describe the main rubbish removal items and mention any unusual things, we can quickly confirm what we take and highlight anything that might be a problem.

Can you take paint, chemicals and cleaning products?
Small amounts of everyday cleaning products are usually fine. Paint and stronger chemicals are more complicated. Dried-out paint tins sometimes fall within what we take, but large quantities of liquid paint and strong chemicals lean towards what we cannot take. Call us first so we can advise.

Can you take tyres and car parts?
Some car parts are within what we take, especially if they are just metal or plastic. Tyres are more restricted. A few tyres may be possible with a surcharge, but a big stack is usually in what we cannot take. It is always best to call so we can tell you where your job sits.

Can you take asbestos or anything that might contain asbestos?
No. Asbestos is firmly in what we cannot take and must be handled by a licensed specialist. If you suspect something may contain asbestos, tell us and we will advise you not to disturb it and to seek specialist help.

What if I am not sure whether something is allowed?
If you are in doubt, assume it might be in the “call us first” category. A short conversation can quickly confirm whether it is clearly inside what we take, firmly in what we cannot take, or something that needs a different service altogether.

Call us if you are unsure what we take

This page should give you a clear picture of what we take and what we cannot take, but it is not a replacement for a quick, practical chat about your specific job. If you have:

  • A mix of standard house clearance items and a few unusual pieces
  • Any concerns about restricted or hazardous materials
  • Questions about heavy DIY waste or garage contents
  • Doubts about whether certain items we collect are allowed

Call us and talk it through. In a few minutes we can:

  • Confirm what we take on your list
  • Point out anything that falls into what we cannot take
  • Suggest safe, legal options for borderline or restricted items
  • Help you plan a clearance that goes smoothly from start to finish

You get clear answers, a realistic plan and the confidence that your clearance will only involve rubbish removal items that we can legally and safely handle.

We used this company on recommendation of another trade that we trust, so I was confident they would do a good job. Rob responded to my message, visited to give a quote and was able to remove our waste on the same day. We agreed payment by bank transfer. We had a large job of old flooring, fencing and general household waste. Rob did the work quickly and efficiently and left our front garden looking the best it has done in weeks. Overall, he did a great job for us and also really appreciated how friendly and professional they were too. Would happily recommend and If we need a pickup in the future he would be the first person we would call.

We used Rob to dissemble, and remove our garden shed, as well as a few other garden items. He was professional, diligent, earnest and really lovely to work with. Reasonably priced too! He worked incredibly hard to sort out quite a complicated setup, and was very transparent - explaining everything to us as he was going along. Couldn’t recommend him enough and will deffo be using him again in the future. Thanks Rob!

I never met Rob in person but that did not take away from the quality of the service provided. I contacted Rob to ask if he could remove a green house from a property we had just purchased (but were not yet living in). He asked for a day or two to check his schedule and confirm his availability. Rob then got back to me the next day and said he could be there the following morning. I was not able to meet him but I said he could let himself into the back yard. He contacted me the next day from the property, provided me with a quote (which I thought was very reasonable), then started with the work immediately. He then contacted me a few hours later, sent me some before and after photos, and that was that. Fast, efficient, well priced, professional, and excellent communication. I am sure I will be using his services going forward and highly recommend these as well. Thank you Rob.
